INTRODUCTION:

In the current social climate, different generations of people are interacting with one another less often. However, research has proven that intergenerational living communities have benefits for “young people who find mentors and build relationships and for older people relieved of feelings of isolation and depression” (Jacobs, 2021). Working on the Hope & A Future extension project is important because it will expand the number of people who can benefit from this concept, and it has the potential to serve as a model for others to repeat this type of living community.

MISSION STATEMENT:

To create a successful, intergenerational community by creating a supportive and stimulating environment where young families can find affordable housing and lonely adults can build strong, intergenerational relationships and flourish together.

CONCEPT

SUSTAINABLE HOMEYNESS

The concept of Sustainable Homeyness strives not only to design a building with sustainably sourced materials, but also to create a community where relationships are built to sustain each other for life. Given the shared, intergenerational aspect of the project, the design must also envelope a welcoming, warm, homey interior to make various users from different backgrounds and generations feel connected and welcomed.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

COMMUNAL KITCHEN & DINING + CREATIVE ICZ

The communal kitchen and dining space in the Hope’s Place expansion of Hope & A Future serves both residents and visitors of the community. While residents have their own full kitchen within their apartment unit, they also have full access to the communal kitchen and dining space. This homey environment has a variety of seating to accommodate not only dining, but also social activities. The seating must properly support all generations of users, and be flexible enough to host large gatherings and potlucks. The materials intended for the communal kitchen are warm and homey. The selections attempt to be both modern and timeless, so as to satisfy all generations’ style tastes.

LEARNING ICZ

The learning ICZ provides a quieter space than the creative ICZ for intergenerational connection. Here, students have a space to do homework, learn from older residents, read, do a puzzle, or play checkers. This space is acoustically separate, provides built in booth seating, and utilizes book shelves to divide the space.

2-BEDROOM APARTMENT

The Hope's Place extension of Hope & A Future provides two one-bedroom apartment units and two two-bedroom apartment units. The floor plan and selections of a two-bedroom unit can be viewed below and on the right. The space is intended to be homey and cohesive with the rest of the design, while also remaining slightly neutral to allow for individualization within each unit.
