MISSION STATEMENT

To establish a flourishing and restful environment that offers unique opportunities and experiences to all of UW-Madison while fostering and strengthening community across campus.

VISION STATEMENT

This rejuvenated, historic building will inspire restoration within individuals of the UW-Madison community. This will be done through a diversity of peaceful distractions from daily stressors and a variety of uplifting spaces. This will provide comfort, engage all of the senses, and establish well-being and a sense of belonging.

SITE BACKGROUND

The ‘Farm Barn’ was originally built in 1868. In 1899, it underwent a $12,000 construction renovation, the year UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) was founded. This building was originally used to house livestock and draft horses for CALS. It is located on the West side of campus, with general adjacencies to the Lakeshore dorms and various campus buildings. The reconstruction of the horse barn was done in a Tudor Revival style, but the barn is unlike standard horse barns, which are typically long, narrow, and one-story. The second floor has several horse stalls, which housed the working horses that students used to work on fields.

“I’d love to have more plants and better lighting.”

“I would frequently go to the horse barn if it had a room with mats where I could just lay down for a bit.”

“I wish spaces had reservations or time limits to make them more accessible.”

“Stress free is studying in a room that’s just me.”

KEY INSIGHTS:

  1. Lack of colorful spaces on campus

  2. People deal with stress in many ways: some increase activity, some desire respite

  3. Students desire spaces they can be alone

RESEARCH
INGRID FETELL LEE

“Broadly speaking, when psychologists use the word joy, what they mean is an intense, momentary experience of positive emotion--one that makes us smile and laugh and feel like we want to jump up and down.”

The patterns are “round things, pops of bright color, symmetrical shapes, a sense of abundance and multiplicity, a feeling of lightness or elevation."

CONCEPT
JOY FOR THE SENSES

The concept “joy for the senses” focuses on sparking moments of joy among users of the wellness center while interacting with all the senses. This human-centered environment will focus on engaging all of the senses through immersive spaces, creative activities, and pet interaction zones. The center will also restore the body, mind, and spirit through reflection and therapy spaces and the ability to nourish oneself with food, sunlight, and fresh air. Lastly, the wellness center will guide users to connect with themselves and one another through group activities, social areas, and community share zones.

Ultimately, the wellness center will utilize moments of joy to engage in the senses, restore the body, mind, and spirit, and connect people with themselves and each other.
